The 3/4 inch U-Matic tape was used in newsrooms and many of the commercials from back in the day were also on this type of tape.  Many of the old MTV music videos were on this In 1971, Sony, Matsushita, JVC and 3M debuted the original standard, 'low band' 3/4 inch analog video cassette tape.  

In 1974, a higher-quality version of that tape was introduced.  The 'high band' featured better color resolution and... check this out.... freeze frame operation!  How cool is that!

There were two tape sizes, the 'small' tape, on average held 20 minutes of video and in some instances, it could hold up to 30 minutes of video.  The large tapes were held up to 60 minutes and in some instances, could hold anywhere from 75 - 90 minutes.

In 1986, the last gasp for air from this dying format came in the form of the 3/4 inch Umatic SP (superior performance).... ooooh.  The video and color resolution was 'superior' to the older versions.  Also, the SP tapes played in non-SP machines with only normal video quality, in fact, a color video will only show up in black in white.

By the early 90s, U-Matic was largely replaced by newer pro-grade formats including the Betacam SP and other types of hardware that delivered superior quality.
